What You Need to Know About AB 1482

The California Tenant Protection Act of 2019 (AB 1482) has implemented new rent caps effective from August 1, 2024, through July 31, 2025. These caps are based on updated Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures for all California counties. Under AB 1482, rent increases are limited to no more than 5% plus the percentage change in the cost of living as measured by the CPI, or 10%, whichever is lower.

For example, in Los Angeles and Orange counties, the CPI increase is 3.9%, resulting in an allowable rent increase of 8.9%. In Riverside and San Bernardino counties, the CPI increase is 4.3%, leading to an allowable increase of 9.3%. These updates ensure tenants are protected from excessive rent hikes while allowing landlords to manage rising costs.

To calculate the allowable rent increase for your property, you can reference the table provided or use the California Apartment Association’s CPI calculator for precise figures.

County of Property 2024 CPI Increase AB 1482 Allowable
